Fungi – The Cultural History of Fungi from Ötzi to Today

The archeoParc Schnalstal Museum in Val Senales, Italy, features a special annual exhibition which explores the cultural and historical significance of fungi, specifically highlighting the tinder fungi and birch polypores Ötzi carried on his final journey.

The exhibition highlights the vital roles these fungi played in ancient survival (such as fire-starting and medicine) and pairs scientific research with sensory, mixed-media art by British-American artist Jana Nicole.

I am a contemporary mixed-media artist working with paper-based sculpture, collage, and large-scale installation. My practice is driven by material exploration and the transformation of delicate forms into immersive, thought-provoking works. Inspired by organic structures—particularly fungi and mycelial networks—I create intricate pieces that play with light, shadow, and space. Combining fine detail with bold composition, my work invites viewers into a tactile, imaginative world that blurs the line between natural forms and constructed environments.

BOTANICAL TROUPE
